Use case: batch sensory control
A sensory-analysis scenario for checking whether a production batch matches the intended product profile.

The decision
Does this production batch match the intended flavour, aroma and texture? This illustrative workflow is for a quality team planning that comparison.
Identify the change
Name the supplier, ingredient or production change that triggered the review.
Output: a batch and reference to compare.
Define the question
Choose whether the team needs to detect a difference, describe it or understand acceptance.
Output: one clear study question.
Plan the study
Agree on the method, sample preparation, evaluators and decision criteria before collecting responses.
Output: a study plan for review.
Review the evidence
Interpret the observations against the study question and agreed criteria. Record limits and unresolved questions.
Output: an evidence summary.
Choose the next action
Document whether to investigate, gather more evidence or continue through the company’s release controls.
Output: an owned follow-up decision.
Choose the question your study must answer
Is there a detectable difference?
A difference question asks whether samples can be distinguished under the chosen test conditions. It does not establish which product consumers prefer.
What has changed?
A descriptive question focuses on attributes such as aroma, flavour or texture. Describing a difference does not by itself establish acceptance.
Is the product accepted?
An acceptance question concerns the intended consumers. Do not treat an internal quality review as evidence of consumer acceptance.
Prepare the decision record
Illustrative planning record — no study results are shown.
- Situation: an ingredient-supplier change prompts a sensory review.
- Comparison: the current reference and the candidate batch.
- Question: define the attribute or difference the team must investigate.
- Evidence needed: the study selected to answer that question.
- Decision owner: the quality team, following its release controls.
- Next handoff: the evidence summary and any unresolved production questions.
Discuss the proposed study and the required product capabilities during the demo. This example does not claim an automated release decision or a customer outcome.
